Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes
Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes
Laurie Walker
One year the young women in my ward participated in an interesting experiment related to dressing modestly. Here’s an account of one young woman who learned about this gospel principle and applied it to her life.
Anna Larsen* was excited that her turn to shop for clothes had finally come. Sister Jensen, her Laurel adviser, had taken each girl in the class shopping to learn a modesty lesson. Anna wasn’t sure what to expect.
When they arrived at the store, Sister Jensen asked Anna to pick out three outfits. As they walked to the dressing room, Sister Jensen said, “After you’ve put on an outfit, come out. Be prepared to have your eyes opened.”
Intrigued by her leader’s directions, Anna put on the sleeveless button-down shirt and hip-hugging skirt. When she walked out, Sister Jensen motioned her to the mirrors. “Now we’re going to play a game.”
“I doubt the clerks would be happy with me playing in their clothes before I’ve bought them,” Anna said.
Sister Jensen laughed and shook her head. “We’re going to play ‘Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes.’”
Anna looked skeptical.
“I’m serious,” Sister Jensen said. “Let’s start with your head.”
Anna put her hands on her head and saw her shirt pull up, baring her skin. “Oops,” she gasped, tugging it back down.
Sister Jensen put Anna’s hands back up. “That’s part of the game. You see how much your shirt lifts up? Now try shoulders,” Sister Jensen said.
When Anna dropped her hands to her shoulders she noticed even more showing inside the armholes. She also saw the shirt straining at the buttons.
“Now bend over and touch your knees and toes,” Sister Jensen advised.
Between her shirt and skirt was a two-inch gap. “Wow,” Anna said.
“I know,” Sister Jensen said. “Now, go try on the next outfit.”
After repeating the game twice more, Anna’s mood dimmed. None of her outfits had completely passed the “Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes” test.
“Don’t worry,” Sister Jensen said. “There’s hope. You just have to know how to put things together.” For the next hour Sister Jensen showed Anna how to layer different clothes to make them modest and stylish. She then challenged Anna to look through her closet and see if any changes needed to be made.
Later that night Anna looked at the mess on her bed. It had been overwhelming trying everything on to see what was modest or immodest. With a sigh she picked up one particular pile and carried it to her mom.
“Mom, I was wondering if I could donate these clothes.”
“Sure, honey. Why?” her mom replied.
Anna smiled. “Have you ever played ‘Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes’?”

CROSS WALK HELPS BRING EASTER ALIVE
Cross Walk helps bring Easter alive
April 23, 2011
By Jenni Vincent - Journal Staff Writer , journal-news.net
MARTINSBURG - Lives were touched Friday thanks to a longstanding local tradition that seeks to help bring Easter to the people.
While this year's Good Friday Cross Walk seemingly got off on a damp note when a couple dozen folks gathered at Trinity United Methodist Church on West Martin Street, it wasn't long before others joined in the winding journey downtown in spite of the cool, rainy weather.
Before the walk concluded in front of The Journal, the ranks had swelled to about 50 participants. Many of them continued to Trinity Episcopal Church for the community Good Friday Service, which began at noon.
Sponsored by the Berkeley County Ministerial Association, the annual event - which started in the 1970s - was new to many folks who encountered it this year.
Michaek Derricote, who was leaving the Martinsburg library with his young daughter Abigail, did a double take when he saw the approaching processional.
"I've never seen this before and I think it is amazing. I like the fact that there are so many people participating. It helps make you think about Easter," Derricote said.
Casey Smith and Kyler Braunberger, Utah residents who are working locally with the Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints, were equally enthusiastic when they accidentally encountered the event just as it was getting started Friday morning.
Gesturing toward the cross that was being used in the walk, Smith said they were walking past the church and noticed it.
"We wondered why they had the big cross out, so we figured we would talk to the folks and see what was going on - especially since this is Easter Sunday," he said.
"I really wanted to touch the cross because it looks so heavy, especially since they said they were going to carry it through town," Smith said.
It is an appropriate, visual reminder of Christ's experience, he added.
"But I'm pretty sure His was much heavier than that one. ... If you think about it, He walked a long way and suffered a lot for us, so it is really cool that they would re-enact it," Smith said.
Trinity United Methodist memberRichard Southerland, who helped set up for the event and first greeted the two Utah visitors, smiled as he recalled the many cross walks he's participated in over the years.
"I guess it's been about 12 years for me. ... It's important because of the season of the year, because Christ died for us and He rose again that we might have eternal life," Southerland said.
Spreading the word is an important part of the walk, he said, smiling at fellow church member Cory Vance.
Vance, a fourth-grader, said he helped Southerland carry the cross last year.
"It was exciting and it made me feel good," Vance said.
The Rev. Charles Henry of Berkeley Place Friendship Church, who spoke at a brief stop in front of the library, had aspecial reason for celebrating since he was accompanied by his wife Shirley and daughter Sheila Owens.
His 5-year-old granddaughter, Elizabeth Owens, also walked with him and helped carry the cross from behind.
"I liked help Pap Pap carry the cross. First I was nervous but then it was fun because it wasn't heavy," she said.
"Easter is important because Jesus died on the cross for us," Owens said.

MESSAGE FROM SISTER WEAVER
Parents,
Girls camp registration forms went home with your daughters this past Sunday. Please take time to fill them out and return them asap. I need to get them to the Stake leaders by May 1, which doesn't leave us much time. Also, after looking at our Ward Camp Budget & discussing this with the Bishop, we will NOT hold a fundraiser @ this time. Your cost for each girl you will be sending to camp is $10. The remaining amount will be paid from our budget. Please pay your $10 on a tithing donation slip under the other category indicating that it is camp registration fee for...(your daughters name :) . We will most likely hold a fundraiser in the fall to get a jump start on next year's camp & other activites that are in the works.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you,
Tonya

WITH MUCH LOVE, SISTER WEAVER
Girls,
I wanted to give you some dates for your calendar.
MARCH
12- Stake Youth Dance 7-10pm
26- Youth Temple Trip WE NEED DRIVERS - we as leaders cannot transport all of our youth. Please let us know if you can help. If we don't get enough volunteers, we will call and ask for help. We will meet at the stake center at 6:45am and anticipate returning around 1:00. The YM President, Bishop and myself are discussing the possiblity of providing some type of the lunch for the youth afterwards. We are sure they will be very hungry by the time we are finished in the temple.
26- General YW broadcast for mothers and daughters. 8pm at Mill Creek Bldg
29- NO Activity
APRIL
5- Dress Rehearsal for Ward Talent Show
9- Ward talent show - sponsered by YW
16- R.A.D. (Regional Activity Day)- 14&up 1:00-9:30pm at Frederick Stake Center - Registration form required. These went home with the girls this Sunday and I need them returned by next Sunday. We will need at least 1 additional driver if all MiaMaids and Laurels are attending.
19- Spring Break- no activity
MAY
10- Stake Conf Week - no activity
12- RS sponsered 1st Aide/CPR - YW are invited to attend. Good refresher before camp!!
OTHER IMPORTANT INFO.
TREK Registration Forms - please have them filled out and returned as soon as you can. The sooner we get these to the stake the better. We also need to be thinking about making bonnets/dresses/pantaloons for the girls. Please let me know if you have talent in this area and can help out with this task. I can barely thread a sewing machine (not kidding) so this is way outside my comfort zone. We are blessed to have Jennifer Merrill in the YW program and I am told she is a sewing whiz but we will need parent help to pull this off. :)
Girls Camp - We just received a flyer last Sunday with information about Girls Camp. It will be held at Camp Eder in Pennsylvania. The cost is $50. We were under the impression that camp was the standard $25 registration fee and therefore were not planning on a fundraiser. But with the increase we feel all could benefit from some type of fundraiser. We will be discussing this week as a presidency what this could be however, if you have any great ideas we would invited them.
That's all I can think of right now and I'm sure that once I hit the send button I will think of something I forgot :). Please let me know if you have any questions or if you can help out with the areas mentioned.
With much love,
Sis. Weaver
